EXPORTING A CHAT

4 taps, on every platform.

DialogSignal reads a file WhatsApp already gives you. Here is where the button is on iPhone, Android and desktop — and what you get when you press it.

What you end up with

The conversation as plain text — a .txt file, or a small .zip holding one, which is what iPhone sends. Either is small enough to email to yourself, and DialogSignal takes both. Choose Without Media and your photos and videos stay on your phone; nothing connects to your WhatsApp account and no plugin is installed.

iPhone

Start inside the chat itself — tap its name at the top.

  1. Open the individual or group chat.
  2. Tap the contact's name or the group name at the top.
  3. Tap Export Chat.
  4. Choose Without Media, then pick how to send it — Mail it to yourself, or Save to Files.

There is a second way in: Settings → Chats → Export Chat, then pick the conversation. That is the screen below.

Android

Export is inside the chat's own menu, 2 levels down — this is the one people hunt for.

  1. Open the chat and tap the ⋮ menu, top right.
  2. Choose More.
  3. Choose Export chat.
  4. Choose Without media, then pick how to send it.

WhatsApp calls the three-dot button More options. The step people miss is the second one — Export chat is not on the first menu.

Desktop

Same place as iPhone — Settings, then Chats.

  1. Open WhatsApp and go to Settings → Chats.
  2. Click Export chat.
  3. Pick the conversation you want.
  4. Choose Without media, then save the file.

WhatsApp's help centre documents phone exports only; this route is taken from the desktop app itself.

That file is the whole input. Upload it and DialogSignal reads every message in it.
